Kathmandu, October 4, 2025 — Continuous rainfall across Nepal has disrupted daily life and raised the risk of floods and landslides, particularly in hill and lowland areas. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall through today and tomorrow, urging the public to stay alert.
Moderate Rainfall Across Kathmandu Valley
Since early Saturday morning, consistent rainfall has been recorded across the Kathmandu Valley. According to DHM, in the past hour alone, Kathmandu received 6 mm of rain, Lalitpur 9.8 mm, and Bhaktapur 5 mm. The rainfall is expected to continue throughout the day, with more intensity forecasted at night.
Rain is also being reported in the surrounding districts of the valley and has spread further south into the Terai region.
Heaviest Rainfall in Kailali District
The most significant rainfall in the last 12 hours has been recorded in Gaurighat, Kailali, where 83.2 mm of rain has fallen — the highest in the country during this period. Other districts in the Terai are also experiencing notable precipitation.
In the past hour, Parsa received 10 mm of rain and Rautahat 10.6 mm. Rain is ongoing in Mahottari and Dhanusha, while over the past 12 hours, Parsa recorded 40 mm and Bara 28 mm of rain.
Risk of Thunderstorms and Landslides Increases
The current rain-bearing system is shifting towards the east and northeast, bringing more rainfall to the affected areas. DHM reports thunderstorms with lightning in various areas of Bagmati and Madhesh Provinces, scattered showers in parts of Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces, and light to moderate rain in sections of Koshi Province.
Given the continued rain over already saturated ground, the risk of landslides in hill districts and flooding in low-lying areas has grown significantly.
“The rain-producing system remains active, particularly in the eastern regions. People should remain cautious and follow the latest weather updates,” said Dinkar Kayastha, spokesperson for DHM.
Official Alert and Public Safety Guidelines
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and the Ministry of Home Affairs have advised all citizens to take the following precautions:
- Avoid riverbanks, hillsides, and areas prone to landslides or floods.
- Do not travel unless necessary, especially in high-risk zones.
- Stay informed through radio, television, or mobile alerts.
- Follow the instructions of local authorities and emergency services.
If heavy rain continues as predicted, officials warn that incidents of flash floods, road blockages, and landslides could escalate, affecting transportation, electricity, and public safety.
