Bipin Joshi was abducted by Hamas during the October 7, 2023 attacks in Israel.
The recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has renewed hopes for the safe return of Bipin Joshi, a 23-year-old Nepali student abducted during the October 2023 attacks. Joshi, who had gone to Israel through the Learn and Earn program, was working at a kibbutz in Alumim when militants stormed the area, killing 10 Nepalis and injuring several others. He and a Thai national were taken hostage.
Nearly two years later, his status remains uncertain. A U.S.-brokered ceasefire includes the release of 48 hostages, but only 20 are confirmed alive. Joshi is not among those confirmed. A video from late 2023 showed him alive, offering his family a glimmer of hope.
His sister Pushpa and mother are currently in the U.S., calling for his release. The Nepali community in Israel and back home closely follows the developments, hoping Bipin is among those freed.
Meanwhile, displaced families in Gaza are returning to damaged homes, and aid efforts are underway. International observers will monitor the truce as Israel and Hamas proceed with a prisoner exchange.
For Bipin’s family, the ceasefire brings renewed faith: “We believe he’s alive. We just want him home.”
